Lifestyle impulse purchases

Do people make impulse purchases on the Internet?

If you have a retail store on the High Street then you can encourage people to look, touch, smell your products. High Street shopping is a sensual experience, so how does this work on the Internet?

Consumers constantly search for the next must have things, they read reviews, they are driven by jealousy and cynical marketing.  When friends, neighbors and family show off their latest lifestyle status symbol, frantic impulse buying online begins, it is driven by the need to be one of the elite herd.

Below is an extract from an article which appeared in The Sunday Telegraph, Sunday 31 July by Veronica Henry.

In praise of impulse buying
'I was 22 when it started, one Saturday afternoon. With a coat the colour of Golden Shred and a flaxen mane and tail, Marmalade was for sale for the princely sum of £800. I hadn't the money, nor anywhere to keep him, nor had I much of an idea how to look after a horse. But by six o'clock that evening he was mine.

His purchase caused uproar, chaos and consternation. But I didn't care. I was high on a cocktail of euphoria, excitement and adrenalin. My nearest and dearest pleaded with me to cancel the cheque, but I was resolute. I woke the next morning knowing life was never going to be quite the same.' Read more...

Business is Art

The cliché 'we can learn from history' is in many cases nonsense - we continue to make the same mistakes over and over again. We do however have to ride that fast learning curve to create new product and have new ideas. Business is not a static immovable object it has to evolve. We have to morph into different markets, pushing our ideas onto the next phase - this is what artists do. Boundaries have to be broken and new frontiers challenged or we simply have to do it better than our rivals. We simply have to be creative.

Below are links to an Art Auction:

Should you wish to make a bid on one or more of the Silent Auction Lots, there are three ways in which you can achieve this:-

a) You can email your bid to us, using the direct link from your chosen lot(s) on our website. The emailed bids will not be accessed until Sunday 11th September at 7.30p.m.

b) You can send a postal bid. Mark your envelope ‘SILENT AUCTION ‘. If you are bidding on more than one Lot, each bid must be on a separate sheet of paper. Envelopes will not be opened until 7.30p.m. on Sunday 11th September.

c) From 15th August there will be a locked post box in St Peter’s Church, West Buckland, where you can post your bids. If your are bidding on more than one Lot, each bid must be on a separate sheet of paper. The box will not be opened until 7.30p.m. on Sunday 11th September.

Remember, which ever method you chose and for which ever Lot you wish to bid on, you will need to show the amount you are pledging, your name and address and your telephone number.

The winner of each Lot will be announced at ‘The Evening with Dana’ concert on Sunday 11th September.

Lot 1 : The choice of one of three paintings or drawings by Gerald Moore. These will be exhibited in St. Peter’s Church from 15th August until 11th September 2011.

Minimum Bid £200

The three paintings are part of the unique Collection of the Works of Gerald Moore and are due to be exhibited permanently soon in a London Gallery. Read more…

Art is a commodity, a product of capitalism

What counts as “valuable” can be defined in a variety of ways. Most websites suffer from unoriginality; they belong to the herd of mediocrity and banality. This is not creativity Art and objects, websites and businesses can take on a life of their own - ideas can snowball and literally grow and survive by themselves.

Objects take on a life of their own when they leave the creators hands. They are no longer the responsibility of the artist (craftsman) - they move through time, out living their custodians, moving on through history and catastrophe. They are survivors.

Cover of "The Hare with Amber Eyes: A Fam...
The Hare With Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance, is a book about 'the history of objects' or in this case a collection of objects, an inherited collection of Japanese netsuke.

Tiny and tactile the netsuke are "small, tough explosions of exactitude." Their story spans cultures and continents. They were originally the possessions (the collection) of the Ephrussis, wealthy Jewish grain traders who spread from Russia to the important, wealthy capitals of Europe - their empire finally being destroyed by the Nazis.

These objects tell a fascinating story about the way the world has been molded by the need for commodities and trade, greed, war and jealousy.

The cliché 'we can learn from history' is in many cases nonsense - we continue to make the same mistakes over and over again. We do however have to ride that fast learning curve to create new products and have new ideas. Business is not a static immovable object it has to evolve. The act of being creative is a love hate thing – The Beauty and The Beast someone fetch a priest (ref. David Bowie)

Beauty and the Beast (French: La Belle et la Bête) is a traditional fairy tale. The first published version of the fairy tale was a rendition by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, published in La jeune américaine, et les contes marins in 1740. The best-known written version was an abridgement of her work published in 1756 by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont, in Magasin des enfants, ou dialogues entre une sage gouvernante et plusieurs de ses élèves; an English translation appeared in 1757. The tale has perhaps been made most recently famous by the retelling in the 1991 Disney film. North Devon Web belongs to a network of websites that host in a green way. North Devon Web is helping to prevent the release of 2,660 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year by hosting on ‘Green Servers’ – as a result, the network’s energy efficiency is equivalent to planting approximately 2,390 acres of trees, not driving 6.1 million miles, or removing 510 cars from the road.

Bideford has two main local newspapers, both published weekly: the North Devon Gazette and the North Devon Journal. The Gazette was founded in Bideford, and was originally known as the Bideford Gazette. It is now a free newspaper, delivered to most local homes, and is now based in Barnstaple. A local newsletter, the 'Bideford Buzz,' is published monthly by a team of volunteers,  this unfortunatley seems to be an inactive WordPress blog.

Below is an extract from a WordPress blog we host.

Since the proliferation of computers, painting could be argued to have migrated to the digital age (world). There is a massive community of artists who use computers to paint color onto a digital canvas using programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter, Gimp and others. Does this mean that new printing techniques have now become absorbed into painting methodologies and practices?

This meshing together of processes, unrelated imagery and the breaking down of barriers cannot be seen as a shortcut to intellectual credibility. The dedicated thought process that goes with the creative procedure should be one of intense reasoning. It is therefore unrealistic to expect the uneducated masses to use the computers prescriptive decision making to create ‘real art’. The birth of Photoshop has enabled everybody to create ‘non-intellectual’ versions of Rauschenberg (and Warhol) – this is not ART.
Allergy

Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a surface. The application of the medium is commonly applied with a brush. In art, the term painting describes both the act and the result of the action. These same criteria can be used to describe printing.” Read more...

Creativity refers to the creation of something new, improved, modified or adapted (a product, a solution, a work of art etc.) that has some kind of value. What counts as “new” may be in reference to the individual creator, or to the society or domain within which the novelty occurs, however the “newness” of a creation must not be confused with originality. What counts as “valuable” is similarly defined in a variety of ways. Most websites suffer from unoriginality; they belong to the herd of mediocrity and banality. Click – copy – paste. Click – copy – paste. Click – copy – paste. Click – copy – paste etc. This is not creativity - but is creativity all that it is cracked up to be?

There are some reference books that follow you and stay with you through out your life. 'Art Since Pop' is such a book, published in 1975 (by Dolphin). This book simply sets out to do what it says in the title, explaining art movements such as Process Art, Land Art, Conceptual Art and Body Art, in a brief but concise way. None of the movements of fine art covered in this pocket sized book are dealt with in great depth but it provides an informed introduction to these different concepts and methodologies, reassessing its effectiveness and ability to move on and change. The beauty of this book is the fact that it was written closer to 'as it was happening' and gives an optimistic appraisal of art movements that have since been sidelined or dismissed as mere Cul-de-sacs.

John A. Walker (b. 1938) is a British art critic and historian who has written over 15 books on modern and contemporary art with an emphasis on mass media. He has also written on design history methodology. Walker's books include Art since Pop (1975), Design history and the history of design with Judy Attfield (1990), John Latham: The Incidental Person - His Art and Ideas (1994), Cultural Offensive: America's Impact on British Art since 1945 (1998),[4] Art & Outrage (1999), Supercollector: A Critique of Charles Saatchi with Rita Hatton (2000),Left Shift: Radical Art in 1970s Britain (2001), Art in the Age of Mass Media (3rd ed.: 2001), Art and Celebrity (2003) and Firefighters in Art and Media: A Pictorial History (2009).

Walker was a Reader in Art and Design History at Middlesex University near London until retiring in 1999. He was trained as a painter at Newcastle upon Tyne.

Thanks - we are a top 5 blog

We are in the Wikio blog charts for August 2011. We are honored to appear in their  top marketing blogs for the UK.

Creating a blog is still one of the best ways of promoting a business. We can build you a green blog on one of our green servers.

Your  blog can be private, as in most cases, or it can be for business purposes. A blog can be used internally within a company to enhance the communication and culture in a corporation or used externally for marketing, branding or public relations purposes. One of our favorite tools is WordPress. This free blogging tool is as an easy and extremely effective way of enhancing your web presence and business. To maintain a successful blog it is important to know your subject and to constantly expand your own personal knowledge. A blog is another marketing strategy used for increasing a site’s relevance, by second guessing what people search for when using a search engine. It is important to write your posts using ‘good’ keywords.

Creating good solid business keywords is not a decorative process it is a complicated exercise. Juxtaposing words together is a bit like creating a collage, the mind always tries to create a narrative when confronted with the written word. The juxtaposition of arbitrary phrases etc. will always tease and trick the mind into rationalizing what it is in front of it and attempt to make physical and world references – in other words try to make sense of what it is trying to analyze. These are the same processes that are used in understanding art Continue reading ?
