2011 National Sculpture Prize Exhibition

Suzanne Hobbs  - Winner of the 2011 prize

“The installation I have created for the Broomhill National Sculpture Prize 2011 is part of a body of work entitled Uncertain Futures. My work is inspired by years working on an organic farm in North Devon and recognising the earths fragile nature. Climate change; food scarcity; conflict over resources, have become international news staples, yet in our consumer society, the importance of our environment to our own survival appears forgotten." Read more...

“Suzanne’s monumental sculpture was chosen for its fantastic interaction with the landscape, providing viewers with a very exciting experience. The piece was beautifully executed with a social awareness angle, tying in with the enclosed trapped emotion of the time we live in. We’re delighted with the outcome, Suzanne put great thought and effort into her piece and is truly deserving of the 2011 title. Many thanks to our sponsors and judges for their support in making this possible.” — Rinus van de Sande

The sculpture that captured visitors attention the most this year and winner of the ‘Public Speaks’ title is Endless Curve by Wenqin Chen, also awarded a ‘Special Commendation’ by the judges for creating an uplifting, open, positive, healing, well executed sculpture that has the right spirit and powerful inspiration in a difficult time.

‘Uncertain Futures: Larder’ is a very emotive and stark construction that is oppressive and fills you with a sense of bleakness. It is without doubt the rightful winner of the 2011 prize.

The Broomhill Art and Sculpture Foundation launched the 'Broomhill National Sculpture Prize' with an annual prize fund of £15,000 in 2009 to provide an exciting challenge for new and emerging UK based sculptors.

I think an Art Exhibition is the business of the day

Since the 1960s, Gerhard Richter has immersed himself in a rich and varied exploration of painting.

I’m looking forward to going to this exhibition.

His career has been defined by versatility and innovation, his work covers virtually every painterly discipline and art methodology; his work can be figurative, abstract and even conceptual. Richter once declared that: “I use different styles like clothes: it’s a way to disguise myself.”
Examples of his work include, 4900 Colours from 2007, which consisted of bright squares that are randomly arranged in a grid pattern to create a kaleidoscopic of colour. It was created around the same time he designed the south transept window of Cologne Cathedral.

Art by mail or mail art?

Mail Art in Wisconsin

Mailart in many respects pushes the boundaries of what can be considered art, it has a surreal or Dada quality about it. Mail art sometimes reaches the mainstream gallery audiences but never really reaches the greater highs. Good mail art would not look out of place next to exhibitions like the  Joseph Beuys exhibition in Cardiff.

Mail art is a worldwide art and music movement that began in the early 1960s. the principle is simple you send visual art (but also music, sound art, poetry, etc.) through the international postal system. Mail Art is sometimes known as Postal Art or Correspondence Art. Mail Art is a network, based on the principles of barter and equal one-to-one collaboration.

After a peak in popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Mail Art phenomenon has gradually migrated to the Internet, whose “social networks” were largely anticipated and predicted by the interactive processes of postal collaborations. Nevertheless, Mail Art is still practiced by a loose planetary community involving thousands of mailartists from the most varied backgrounds.

Buy Art! Just buy something!

The stats you get on your web traffic may indicate you have kept people on your sites for hours but what are they doing? Are they stealing your content or ideas? Quality clicks are a rare commodity, your web content needs constantly updating – it needs to be fed in order to sustain your client audience, they need to know what you have to say about your works of art or products and they need constantly updated material.

You need to keep your website fresh and you need to update your products. The client is looking for advice and a bargain:

What is the best art to buy? Originals or copies? These are actually rather difficult question to answer. There are some editions of prints that are well worth buying, these are short run, numbered editions signed by the artist. The majority of prints available on the Internet are mass produced, unnumbered, poorly printed (on low grade paper stock) and are a bad investment, considering they still demand outrageous prices, some over the £100.00 price tag! These mass produced prints are not worth the paper they are printed on!

We can keep you looking sweet!

As an 11 year old I watched the first moon landing in 1969. I was mad about everything to do with space travel, I would read anything that was about rockets, cosmonauts and astronauts. Later in my life I shook the hand of a man who shook the hand of my all time hero Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, that was for me like touching history, if only secondhand (excuse the pun).

Business in Europe?

The inability of Germany and France to actually make a definitive decision, to resolve our inertia, continues to have lasting repercussions on European (small) businesses. Yet more talks are to be embarked on this week... What is their problem? Self interest and power struggles between the major players are not funny, these egotistical, purse snatchers are behaving like a bunch of adolescents. The European economy is not a new business start up it is a massive machine that supports millions of people. This petulance is something we can't afford and is something that the small businessman fully understands - he knows that if he doesn't leave his ego at home (when he goes into the office) the day will be difficult and non productive, if not totally disastrous. The small businessman also knows they will be the only people who will pull Europe out of this mess, they have to create new businesses and find new markets.

The ability to grow an idea into a business need not be such a difficult task. Entrepreneurs sometimes become blind to the obvious, convinced that their vision is the only possible route towards success. The entrepreneur’s inability to seek help and let go of their creation is sometimes the reason why they fail, avoiding or dismissing processes which offer better methods and practices. In other words they do not seek advice or they do not take advice - which may provided them the tools and techniques that could noticeably improve efficiency or growth, which in turn can lead to faster return on investment and increased profits.

Exeter has been identified as one of the top ten most profitable locations for a business to be based. The city has good transport links, with Exeter St David's railway station, Exeter Central railway station, the M5 motorway and Exeter International Airport connecting the city both nationally and internationally. Although a popular tourist destination, the city is not dependent on  tourism for its survival and commerce. If your company requires a business website or your site needs managing, we can help.

I studied fine Art at Exeter College of Art and Design and was thinking about moving back there so I thought I would get a survey done on a property and I discovered these chaps.

Exeter Surveyors

They are a practice of chartered surveyors covering Exeter, Exminster, Topsham and the surrounding area, They do all sorts of professional work including building surveys, structural surveys, homebuyer reports and property valuations. You can contact them here: 01392 919 012.
Exeter is the county town of Devon and home of a magnificent Cathedral. Exeter Synagogue is the third oldest Synagogue in Britain, completed in 1763. The ruins of Rougemont Castle is in Exeter, where the last person in England executed of witchcraft was imprisoned. Exeter University is ranked in the top 200 universities in the world for its academic achievements. Unfortunatly my Art college no longer exists but I am grateful for the education I got there.

Exeter was bombed by the German Luftwaffe in the Second World War, when a total of 18 raids between 1940 and 1942 flattened much of the city centre. In 1942, as part of the Baedeker Blitz and specifically in response to the RAF bombing of Lübeck, vast areas of the city, were levelled by incendiary bombing. Many historic buildings were destroyed, and others, including the grand Cathedral of St Peter in the heart of the city, were damaged.

Entrepreneur?

The Entrepreneur of the 21st century has to understand creativity to survive in our multi-visual world.

Can entrepreneurs learn from art?

There are misconceptions about creativity, which are perpetuated by jargon; ‘thinking outside the box’. This implies the solution to a problem is to work outside the normal sphere of practice, to think laterally. “Innovation derives in part from what happens when boundaries (either geographical, technological, organizational or conceptual boundaries) are exposed and crossed and something new is discovered in the crossing.” (The Maverick Way)

This is one way to create new markets or new products, however it is possible to be outside the box and think your way in, this is equally as creative and is a methodology employed by some artists. To position yourself outside a market or business and be a voyeur can be devastatingly effective in creating clone or competitor markets/products. The trick is to remain voyeuristic and not to climb into a box. These people could be called ‘Creative Scavengers’ or simply Artists.

Is your business running you? We have green solutions

  • Duchamp: I would have wanted to work, but deep down I’m enormously lazy. I like living, breathing, better than working. I don’t think that the work I’ve done can have any social importance whatsoever in the future. Therefore if you wish, my art would be that of living: each second, each breath is a work which is inscribed nowhere, which is neither visual nor cerebral. It is a sort of constant euphoria.
I have always believed that there is a lot to learn from the history of art. Artists and their crazy approach to their artworks are sometimes similar to a maverick approach to business. But why is keeping things going always the problem? Why is sustainability so difficult?
hum_bug
Creating a new website or business is an exciting process but how long does it take before the enthusiasm wears off and the whole thing, the effort, the drive etc. becomes a chore. Sometimes it is a bit like being held to ransom by your own creation - it has become a monster, a mistress and a master. The whole thing implodes and (isolated) you feel the whole world is against you. Your business is running you, instead of you controlling your dreams.

It is all about survival and creating strategies that make things easier. History books are full of accounts of survival and victory over wars of attrition, apply the solution to your entrenchment. Take control and be the dictator of your own destiny. The alternative is to sink deeper into depression and become overwhelmed and worn down by the prospect of carrying on - to the point of collapse.

Getting people to impulse buy is difficult?

A friend of my father's is addicted to shopping online he has a garage full of stuff including 4 large sacks of Lumache pasta, and several sets of garden furniture. I suppose his impulse purchasing is a serious habit (I can't get him to buy my paintings though so he can't be that ill). What do you do and how do you get people to buy your stuff if you own an online store?

Setting business traps

Owning a small business requires a lot of faith and belief, you need to believe in your product (after all it is your baby). To simply survive you require enthusiasm, conviction and self belief. I have all this and much, much more…but it is so tiring!

We try to make ourselves and our products appear eye-catching, intelligent, attention-grabbing, sexy and practical, hoping and praying that our visitors trust us enough to purchase from us. The content of your enterprise has to be either useful or enlightening and be contained with in a cohesive structure. Where does the visitor go when he lands on your page? You have to corral the interloper and steer them into a pen. Create a cage that keeps them locked into your site; tame them so they don't want to leave. It is no good being left with a deserted graveyard of a site, dumped in the bone yard of ancient history web dreams. Set your traps carefully and snare your visitors.

Bideford green web deal

North Devon Web belongs to a network of websites that host in a green way. North Devon Web is helping to prevent the release of 2,660 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year by hosting on ‘Green Servers’ – as a result, the network’s energy efficiency is equivalent to planting approximately 2,390 acres of trees, not driving 6.1 million miles, or removing 510 cars from the road.

The web hosting industry has a negative impact on the environment due to the energy hungry servers that are used to keep the Internet fueled. We can all try to limit the impact where possible and hosting on a green server is a step in the right direction. More and more people are buying from carbon ethical companies - tackling climate change is an important criteria.

Bideford has two main local newspapers, both published weekly: the North Devon Gazette and the North Devon Journal. The Gazette was founded in Bideford, and was originally known as the Bideford Gazette. It is now a free newspaper, delivered to most local homes, and is now based in Barnstaple. A local newsletter, the 'Bideford Buzz,' is published monthly by a team of volunteers,  this unfortunatley seems to be an inactive WordPress blog.

We are based in North Devon, (UK) – we provide a web site updating service. We will update your site, even if we didn’t design it in the first place. There is nothing worse than a web site that contains out of date information….this gives the buying public the wrong impression.

Bideford is fortunate to have a fantastic Museum and Art Gallery located near the center and waterside of the town. The permanent collection contains nearly 350 pieces of mainly West Country slipware pottery and other ceramics. The majority are from the North Devon area.

WordPress app for iPhone

Well here we are and there is a great spread out in front of us - there is: roast chicken (my favorite) two iPhones, carrots and peas, a Samsung Galaxy, potatoes, gravy and an iPod Touch (not forgetting a bowl of salad). I have been looking forward to this all day. I only managed to grab a small sandwich for lunch while I slaving over my iMac.

The best thing about my iPhone is my WordPress app. The WordPress app allows you to update several blogs from one device, moderate comments, create or edit posts and pages and add images or videos more easily. The best feature is the ability to add a photo quickly to your posts. This was more difficult to do with the earlier versions of the app.

WordPress for business

One of our favorite tools is WordPress. This free blogging tool is as an easy and extremely effective way of enhancing your web presence and is superb for optimising a website. Read more...

We can write great content for your website

WE can guide you through the conception, birth pangs and sustainability of your web presence, we can create content for your website that can help you sell your products or services, we can optimize your site for search engines and submit them to the major players. We use a combination of automated and human processes to help you towards achieving world domination.

Small businesses need to increase their web presence effectively and cheaply. There are a lot of free, and exceptional efficient tools out there and some are more powerful (getting your products into search engines) than expensive branded software and tools. This little step will help you stay in business.

WordPress appeared in 2003, with a few users who were looking for a way to enhance the typography of writing on the Web. Since then it has grown to be the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world, used on millions of sites and seen by tens of millions of people every day.
While it’s generally acknowledged that there are many benefits to using Internet technology to enhance business processes, many smaller organizations are putting off the whole idea as it’s perceived as too difficult or too expensive to set up and maintain. Whilst it’s certainly true that it isn’t something to be rushed into, with a little help, it really isn’t that difficult.

Our other services:

Green hosting for small to medium sized business

North Devon Web is an affordable green hosting solution for the small to medium sized business, specializing in getting the most out of ...

Facebook and Twitter - a business myth or simply rubbish?

Do you remember the story of the emperors new clothes, you know the one about the king type guy who walked around naked because he was told he looked good and only the smart dudes could see and appreciate his finery. Me thinks that is what Facebook has become, when I look closely at it I see very little substance - or maybe I am not 'cool' and out of step - underneath the finery all I see is a mishmash of clutter and idle chitchat. It's a load of bollocks!

Creating networks that increase sales are a vital part of business survival. Everybody is using networks like Twitter and Facebook however, the majority of advertising opportunities within these sites are shrinking. These sites are becoming as ineffective as having an advert on a local radio station that has no listeners.

The reason for me saying this is that we have all fought against spam emails; our cluttered inboxes were an annoying part of our daily routine and cleanliness became a ritual habit; like cleaning our teeth, the more we did it the better things became. Now we are bombarded with 'twitter spam' and 'facebook statuses' - I can't see the advertising opportunities for small businesses in them anymore.

There are writers and marketing gurus who still swear by using social Network sites. Here is my top tip:

Don't Bother -  There are millions of people out there trying to make a fortune from networking sites - social networking is becoming a dead end, it has begun to eat itself. Think smart, direct you business to the right target, stop pissing in the ocean.

A bombardment of self promotion from twitter, facebook etc.

"Come and see my new products on my new website! ;)"  You know as soon as that pops up in front of you on your screen the prospect of having a tooth removed without pain relief is more tempting. This constant relentless blitzkrieg of drivel makes me want to surrender. Quite frankly if your modus operandi is purely to get noticed, because you think  you are interesting, you need to get a life! Put some of your energy into saving the planet (or a Panda) and not just your ego. Better still get out there and make real friends and become interesting.

This constant bombardment of self promotion from twitter, facebook etc. is driving me nuts. The Internet is a more sophisticated tool than this. It is a travesty to allow it to become a vehicle for pure unadulterated, egotistical spam.

World internet usage statistics show that the internet is still doubling in size in the U.S. and growing from 400 to 1000% a year, worldwide. In fact, the total electric bill to operate those servers and related infrastructure equipment was $2.7 billion in the United States and $7.2 billion worldwide. It is estimated that if energy consumption with web hosting keeps raising at the current rate by 2020 the industry will be more polluting than the airline industry. With so much demand on resources, eco-friendly hosting services, utilizing green marketing, has emerged.

Business not black hat

Black hat applied in the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) industry, uses SEO tactics that attempt to redirect search results to particular target pages in a fashion that is against the search engines' terms of service. White hat methods are generally approved by the search engines.

A black hat is often a term to describe a villain or bad guy, this metaphor is visualised in western movies where the 'baddie' wears a black hat in contrast to the hero's white hat. The phrase is used in computing slang, where it refers to a hackers or the 'dark arts' of search engine optimisation (also called spamdexing). Using black hat tricks in optimization of sites will result in being banned by the major search engine. Over loading keywords, meta tags and content key words will result in a loss of ranking and will inevitably lead to your website un-indexed.

You have to create a drama with your website - its content has to be dramatic and awesome. Walk onto Exmoor and soak in the landscape, the imagery and mystery, then go home and try to recreate a similar experience in a website - it is not easy!
