Dead gannet on Woolacombe beach

I've just been for a walk on Woolacombe beach.

The beach was littered with dead gannets, all slightly decomposed. Adult birds are large and bright white with black wingtips. They are distinctively shaped with a long neck and long pointed beak. Not sure what caused this bizarre sight but it was very sad.
