There are countless ways to talk about art; some positions harden into an unforgiving purity that questions everything and spares nothing. That stance prizes stripping away metaphor, romance, and ornament until only raw principle remains. Purity can yield clarity, but left alone it becomes a desert: little room to live, to play, or to create. Recycling an idea (even a metaphor) can sometimes metamorphosise into an anarchistic rethinking of a stagnant position.  

Artists who insist on perpetual refusal, risk turning the work inward until it no longer speaks beyond itself. The same logic applied to a business—where profit is treated as the sole measure of value—produces blinkered decisions, attrition, and a culture that confuses austerity for strength.

Metaphor and Meaning

Metaphor is not a lazy shortcut. It’s the engine by which art and business translate invisible forces into something tangible. Saying “the company grew from a seed” is not deception, it’s a map: it points at patience, care, and conditions that enable growth. Language—figurative, precise, or messy—shapes what we pay attention to and how we act. Starting a new business is just like setting off on a journey, full of excitement and uncertainty.

Rejecting metaphor in the name of purity often sacrifices the very communicative richness that lets ideas spread and communities form. To insist on absolutes is to narrow the field of play; to embrace language’s full range is to invite possibility.

Practice Over Doctrine

Creating something new—whether a painting, a product, or a company—takes time, thought, and sometimes professional skill. Few of the achievements we admire happen in isolation. Collaboration, critique, and the willingness to accept help expand what’s possible. The work isn’t weakened by support; it’s amplified.

Small efforts accumulate. One grain is meaningless on its own; countless grains become a beach. Most contributions remain unseen; a few occupy the surface and catch the light. That distribution is not failure, it is the geometry of any collective endeavour.

Clarity Without Coldness

Use clear, jargon-free language that carries warmth and intent. Aim for communication that honours complexity without obscuring it. Be rigorous without becoming cruel. Hold standards that invite others in rather than push them away.

A Final Note on Balance

Art and business share a core dilemma: how to remain true to an inner compass while still making something that can be lived with, shared, and sustained. Purity and pragmatism are not enemies when held in tension. Let language be the bridge between them. Let metaphor be the handrail that helps new ideas cross the practical world.
